​​In 1941 the United States is being drawn into World War II. Yankee, Joe DiMaggio is on a hitting streak. And fourteen year-old Junior Bledsoe just wants a chance to prove himself to his father.

Then Pop dies unexpectedly, leaving Junior confused and angry. His insufferable Granddaddy, who lives with him and Momma, only makes matters worse. School feels pointless and a classmate, Dudley Walker, adds to his frustrations.
