Text Box: The Birth of BLUE
When I signed up for a history writing workshop, the instructor gave me an assignment to research some historical event that happened in my backyard. I inquired at my local history museum and learned that in 1944, my hometown created an emergency polio hospital in 3 days.
Naturally I headed for my local library. The real-life heartwarming stories I discovered, inspired me to retell the story in a novel.  But who would my story be about?  After some research I realized my character was a spunky young lady.  I called her Ann Fay Honeycutt.
When Ann Fay's daddy goes off to fight Hitler he gives her instructions to be the man of the house in his absence.  She’s handling the challenge pretty well until a polio epidemic strikes her community. At first she relies on the newspaper for information about the disease, but all too soon she knows its devastating effects firsthand.

I wrote Best Friends Forever for a contest - the assignment was to write about the diversity of American life.  At first I thought I wasn't qualified to write about diversity since I'm just your middle of the road American.  But then I realized that since I am a Mennonite some people may think I'm kind of unusual.  I have an adult friend who is Ukrainian and Orthodox. The two of us are alike in many ways but also quite different. I decided to write a story about two girls who were a lot like us when we were younger.
Rhoda Landis, a Mennonite from Pennsylvania moves to Snow Hill, Maryland for one year. In her new school she meets Nadia, a Ukrainian Greek Orthodox girl. Although the two girls are different, they become fast friends. They create wacky fun, get into trouble, share life and death experiences, and discover they don’t want to leave each other at the end of the year.
